Part of a package of 7 bills to implement the recommendations of the 2020 Independent Review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the Samuel Review), the bill establishes the statutory position of the Head of Environment Information Australia to provide access to, assess and report on environmental information and data.

Long overdue. We can't set credible environment policy without a single authoritative source of data — Environment Information Australia gives the EPA, scientists, and the public the same numbers to argue from.

Watson-Brown voted no because the bill stops short of giving EIA the independence it needs — Minister still controls funding and priorities. Will be watching the regulations closely.
