Question

In January 2026 it was announced that the Government had allocated 306 new Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program places to the as part of the 2025-6 budget measure of $265.4 million to expand GP training - 1. Were targets set for allocation of places to rural versus metropolitan training within this new allotment of training places? If not, why not? How does the Department expect to shift the dial on rural GP/RG shortages if does not prioritise enhancement to workforce development pathways specific to the regions? 2. Of the 306 new AGPT places allocated for 2026, how many have been allocated to the rural stream, versus the standard steam, if any? What is the reasoning behind this decision?
