Clinical guidelines - Uterine Curettes
Question
Australia often outsources the development of clinical guidelines to medical colleges like RANZCOG, rather than the NHMRC (unlike the UK model). ? Why does the Department take that approach? ? What consultation obligations are there on colleges in the development of clinical guidelines? Is there any obligation to seek feedback from consumers? ? RANZCOG have not developed clinical guidelines for the use of uterine curettes in post-partum procedures. Can the Minister direct them to develop guidelines? Can the NHMRC be tasked with developing guidelines if RANZCOG fails to do so? ? RANZCOG lagged nearly two decades behind UK and EU counterparts in advising against the use of sharp curettes in managing miscarriages. How can the Department ensure clinical guidelines are more responsive and up to date? ? What information is currently available to women facing surgical procedures requiring curettage to properly understand the risks before consenting to the procedure? Where is that information found? Are doctors required to provide it to women before a procedure?
