Question

1. What proportion of the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) will be allocated to Non-Animal Model / New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in 2026-27? a. Will preference now be given to research that uses non-animal methods over research that tests on animals? 2. Will funding be made available for Focus Area Action 28 to establish a National Collaborative Platform for Non-animal Technologies? a. Which agencies will lead this activity and what is the expected timeline? 3. Why is there such a lag in the increase to the annual MRFF disbursements (i.e. increasing to $1b from 2030-31) when funding is urgently needed to support the development and validation of NAMs? 4. Given the $24.3m uplift to the NHMRC's operating resources, will the NHMRC recruit staff with expertise in NAMs? If not, why not?
