Fiscal analysis of legislation
Question
Senator HUME: Fiscal can. I would like to specifically request that Fiscal Group looks at the impact of equivalent legislation in Queensland, and then reports back to this committee about the potential impacts that this legislation could impose on taxpayers for the Commonwealth. Senator Gallagher: I'm sorry; I don't know that the committee can task the department to do a piece of work. Senator HUME: You asked me what I hoped to hear from Fiscal. That's what I hoped- Senator Gallagher: No, I said I'm not sure there's anything we're going to be able to assist you with as part of Fiscal Group. Senator HUME: You don't think Fiscal Group should have a look at this legislation? Senator Gallagher: We've taken on notice any involvement that Treasury has had in this legislation, but I don't think it's reasonable for an opposition senator to be tasking Treasury officials to do a piece of work and report back to the committee- Senator HUME: No, we expect government ministers to do that. Senator Gallagher: It's not your job to task Treasury officials to do work for you, I'm sorry. It's simply not the case. Senator HUME: I'll ask you, Minister: will you task Treasury officials to look at the potential fiscal implications of this legislation? Senator Gallagher: I've already undertaken on notice to come back to the committee about any involvement Treasury has had in this. Senator HUME: That's not the question I asked you. Senator Gallagher: That is what I've taken on notice.
