Question

Senator KOVACIC: I have some questions on the Office for Youth. Could you tell me how many briefs the Office for Youth has provided to the government in the last 12 months? Ms Chipperfield: We'll have to take that question on notice. Senator KOVACIC: Is that something you could provide for us today? Ms Chipperfield: Certainly, we can action that right now, and I should be able to give you the answer shortly. ..... Senator KOVACIC: Are you able to give me an indication of the nature of the topics of those briefs? Ms Chipperfield: Many of those briefs would be on events that the Minister for Youth is attending-so meetings with young people and attendance at key events. Earlier this year, the minister met with the Youth Steering Committee and also attended different events as part of Youth Meets Parliament Week. There's also briefing related to the release of particular data sources and datasets that we have. Again earlier this year, we released the national youth survey report-so information relating to that. Senator KOVACIC: I note you mentioned the Youth Steering Committee. Are there any other briefs specifically about policy advice from young people? Ms Chipperfield: I'll need to take that on notice, but I do expect that there would be advice from the Office for Youth relating to the different perspectives and survey data that we have collected through our time. Senator KOVACIC: I'd be particularly interested in what policy topics were covered. If you do have a high-level summary document that you could even provide today, that would be very useful. Ms Chipperfield: Certainly. ..... Senator KOVACIC: Regarding the National Youth Survey, was taxation brought up as a key issue? Ms Chipperfield: The cost of living was identified as a key issue for young people through that survey. As Ms Brighton has already flagged, the National Youth Survey canvassed a range of broad issues. It didn't go down into the specifics of that. Senator KOVACIC: It didn't become granular, but the cost of living was a key issue? Ms Chipperfield: The cost of living and housing certainly were. That survey also asked young people's perspectives on how they would like to engage with government, what some of the barriers that are stopping them from engaging with government are and the different ways in which they'd like to stay informed. What we can do, as part of our commitment to coming back to you around the briefing, is also give you the detailed breakdown of that data from that survey and the types of questions that were asked, as well as the demographics.
