Minister for Early Childhood Education | Minister Review of Mandatory Child Safety Training
Question
Senator O'SULLIVAN: ...If preventing educator-perpetrated abuse is a key priority, how is a training package in which roughly only 10 per cent of content addresses that risk fit for purpose? Senator Walsh: My answers to these questions are as follows. Ministers came together. We were united about the importance of training. We were united about the importance of the workforce. We understand that educators are the most important asset that we all have in keeping children safe. Education ministers together, as a group, made a decision about how the training would be developed. The Queensland government has taken a lead on that. We're all very grateful to the Queensland government for doing that. The Australian Centre for Child Protection developed the training. This is foundation training. There will be more advanced training. There have been a range of experts around the process. I'm satisfied with the process. I'm satisfied that it is the experts and not the politicians who have developed the training. Senator O'SULLIVAN: Has the senior minister, Minister Clare, viewed the material? Senator Walsh: I would have to take that on notice.
