Question

AEMO forecasts data centre electricity consumption will rise from approximately 2 per cent of NEM demand today to between 8 and 11 per cent by 2035. Around 1.5 per cent of data centre electricity is currently transmission-connected, forecast to grow to 32 per cent by FY2030. a. Which agency holds overall coordinating responsibility for the cross-portfolio energy planning response to this growth? b. Has the Government modelled where new generation capacity will need to be built to service this demand, and whether the renewable rollout timeline can meet it? c. Is the transmission network capable of absorbing this growth within the current grid-connection timeframe of 12 to 24 months per project? d. The expectations state new facilities should not place upward pressure on energy prices.
