Minister Watt responded to Senator Sarah Hanson-Young in a letter 13 May 2026 noting that, under section 13(2) of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984, he has written to South Australian Ministers seeking advice on whether state law provides ''effective protection'' for the Hillside area and objects. (a) On what dates were those consultations initiated, which SA Ministers were consulted, (b) have responses been received, and what is the department's assessment of whether SA law is providing effective protection in this case?
