US SSN Disposal

Question

In relation to the ex-USN Virginia Class submarines Australia is procuring through the AUKUS agreement, can Defence provide advice on the following. 1. How mature is the Agency's disposal plan for the submarines? 2. What United States (US) laws and/or regulations (e.g. International Trafficking of Arms Regulations) could be relevant and applicable to the disposal (disposal covers the US phases of; inactivation, reactor compartment disposal, and recycling the rest of the ship) of the US nuclear submarines? 3. Has the Agency sought and/or obtained any exemptions from US laws that would or could require the platforms to be returned to the United States for disposal? 4. Has the Agency obtained any exemptions from those relevant US laws?
