AU-US Involvement in Iran
Question
1) What requests have been made of Australia to provide support in the Iran Conflict involving the United States, Iran, Israel and many Gulf countries? 2) What does the Department consider a formal 'request for support'? And what constitutes an 'informal' request for support in this case? 3) What's the official process to deal with a formal or an informal request for support? 4) Has Australia refused any requests for support, either formal or informal? On 10 March, the Prime Minister announced the deployment of an E-7A Wedgetail and the provision of AMRAAM missiles to the UAE and at this stage that there were "a range of requests made of Australia. Also on 10 March, the Deputy Prime Minister confirmed that "a number of other countries, including the US" had made requests. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Minister Marles made it clear there had been multiple requests, he also made the point repeatedly that the Government had NOT responded to the US requests and instead responded to the UAE request. 5) Has the Australian Government responded in any capacity to the United States request, what did this request involve and what reasons were given for the response? 6) Has this refusal to consider the United States Requests damaged Australia's relationship with our key security partner and ally? 7) If the suggestion is that no requests have been made, how does the Department consider the numerous public comments from President Trump regarding Australia's refusal to provide support?
