The United States Maritime Construct request
Question
On 28 March A United States cable revealed that the US was creating its own, defensively postured coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz which seemingly was responding to the EU-led approach. 1) When was Australian Government made aware of the United States Maritime Construct request? 2) What exactly has been requested from Australia and are there any deadlines included? 3) Has Australia provided any response to the US administration through any channel? Including the US Embassy diplomats we understand provided the Government with the initial information? 4) The construct called for countries to consider a wide range of options for supporting efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, correct? Such as surveillance, logistics, headquarters staff, intelligence sharing, diplomatic support or participation in planning? 5) On 30 April, Prime Minister Albanese said "no determination" had been made but suggested that discussions were underway with the United States about the proposal. Has there been an update on this request? Has Australia formally responded? 6) Will Australia commit to both the EU-led operation AND the Maritime construct or will it choose between them? 7) What signal does it send to the United States that Australian Ministers have refused to answer or entertain any involvement with the United States, while it has simultaneously signed Joint statements and been far more comfortable speaking about the EU -led mission?
