Question on Notice 1527/2025: Number of beds
Topic
Number of beds
Question
QUESTION Will the Minister provide (in table format, reported separately by Hospital and Health Service to the latest available date) the total number of interim care beds (total bed capacity and not those that are currently occupied)? ANSWER The Hospital and Health Services utilise bed capacity across the system to respond to inpatient cohort needs. As such there is no designated and counted interim bed capacity. As at 24 November 2025, 1,259 patients were experiencing delayed discharge in Queensland, with an additional 450 patients in interim care. These patients, whilst clinically ready for discharge, were left stranded in Queensland public hospitals waiting for aged care placements and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) assistance. A funding shortfall from the Albanese Federal Government has stranded patients without suitable care options and languishing in hospital beds. The Crisafulli Government is doing everything it can to ensure patients receive the healthcare they need and deserve, however funding for the NDIS and aged care is primarily the responsibility of the Australian Government. The Albanese Federal Government’s inability to provide for Stranded Australians is costing Queenslanders $2.88 million every single day. All State and Territory Health Ministers have called on the Federal Albanese Government to meet its responsibility to care for older Australians and NDIS patients.
